A boring Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 might make style a big feature

Image
Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are expected to be unveiled in less than two months, but not much is known about what will be new. We expect Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 to include the  first CPU upgrade in years. The successor to the Apple Watch may also use a 3D printing process for some hardware parts. Perhaps Apple has a few surprise features in store for watchOS 10 . Maybe we’ll see a new watch face that Apple hasn’t shown yet. New versions of iOS almost always have new software features that only exist on new iPhones. Could we see this happen on the watch this year? I don’t think Apple Watch Series 9 will have a new design. The original Apple Watch, Series 1/2, and Series 3 shared the same case design. Apple Watch Series 4, 5, and 6 shared a new design of their own with less boxy, larger screens. Apple Watch Series 7 was a much more subtle redesign, but the bezels were reduced enough to make the previous versions look old. Apple Watch Serie...

I used Motorola and Samsung folding phones. Only one gets this feature right

Image
Any device's software is vital, but when you have less screen real estate to work with the user interface, it becomes much more significant. When it comes to folding usefulness, the Motorola Razr series has always outperformed the Galaxy Z Flip family. With its large cover screen, Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 5 this year narrows the difference between the two clamshell folding smartphones. But sporting a big outer display doesn’t immediately make a flip phone foldable a whole lot more useful; case in point – the Oppo Find N2 Flip , where Oppo gave us six widgets (and added a couple more later) to play around with and called it a day. While Samsung brings 13 widgets to the table, the cover screen software is still not on par with the Motorola Razr Plus . I’ve waited for years to get a big cover display on a Galaxy Z Flip phone for two reasons. One, I prefer Samsung’s cameras over Motorola’s for reliability and color tuning. Second, I like One UI and had high expectations of how it ...

The most disappointing mobile phones of 2023

Image
2023 is turning up to be a really special year for the release of mobile devices, with an astounding amount of announcements and high quality. It's important to call attention to a few devices that stick out among this wide array of options because they are not inherently good. While the four devices featured in this publication are undoubtedly of good quality, they somehow fail to capture my attention. It’s important to note that individual preferences vary, and what doesn’t resonate with me might still be a great choice for other users. However, from my perspective, these devices exhibit certain significant shortcomings that cannot be overlooked. When it comes to selecting from the array of noteworthy releases in 2023, singling out a single favorite becomes quite the challenge. With options like the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy A54 5G , Redmi Note 12, and OnePlus 11, there’s no shortage of intriguing choices. Nevertheless, it’s easier for me to pinpoint those that left me di...

How coding training nurtures software developers from Mahama refugee camp

Some of the 80 students during a training on coding at Mahama refugee Camp in Kirehe. Emmanuel Nkangura. Leilah Carmene Ntirampeba, a refugee in Mahama camp in Eastern Province, had lost hope for the future when her family fled Burundi in 2015. Ntirampeba, 24, enrolled in a local secondary school and studied Mathematics, Economics and Geography. After secondary school, she enrolled in a coding programme offered at the camp located in Kirehe District. Though life in a refugee camp means that there are limited resources and it is hard to have reliable incomes, training in software development offers opportunities for employment and internship placements for refugees like Ntirampeba. The Burundian refugee is one of the top performers in a cohort of 40 students, who attended 10 months of training in software development. “Along with my colleague, we are developing an app which will help refugees access health services; we named it Mahama Med-care app,” said Ntirampeba, who is one of top 20...

How AI integration could transform education

Advanced AI models like ChatGPT, Synthesia, Midjourney, DALL-E2. Research has demonstrated that when used effectively, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to enhance teaching effectiveness and improve student outcomes, thereby revitalizing education systems to better equip students for the demands of the 21st century. The impact of AI integration is already noticeable in various sectors, with education beginning to harness its capabilities. While early forms of AI like expert systems and basic machine learning have been used in education for over six decades, recent advancements are introducing significant changes. Advanced AI models like ChatGPT, Synthesia, Midjourney, DALL-E2, and Bard can perform various tasks such as writing essays, creating images, explaining complex topics, and providing step-by-step guidance for solving math problems. These capabilities often surpass those of traditional educational technology or "edtech" systems. However, t...
